Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American musician, actress, and rapper. Her performance as a singer, music as well as a film and television artist has won her the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Their divorce occurred at the age of Latifah was ten years old. Latifah grew up in the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. In her early twenties, her cousin gave her the stage name Latifah, which means delicate and kind in Arabic. Latifah has always been tall, standing 5'10", she was the strong forward for her high school basketball team. The number she sang was"Home" from the show The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah became a beatboxer for her band, the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was among the founding members of the form of Flavor Unit which at that time was a crew composed of MCs and producers led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. He gave it back to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the track. He signed Latifah, and released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
